Eco adventurer Hans Tholstrup has hit the road and proved the new Hyundai i30 CRDi turbo-diesel is one of the most fuel efficient small cars in Australia.
Starting in Adelaide, the tank of the i30 was sealed by the state roadside authority, RAA, before Tholstrup set off. With the goal to reach Sydney on one tank of fuel, Tholstrup arrived in Sydney with fuel for over 200 kilometres left in the tank … so he decided to continue his journey to Newcastle.
The i30 achieved an amazing 3.66 litres/100km on its journey to Sydney, substantially lower than the government combined fuel average of 4.7 litres/100km – and even more amazing considering the drive used the same roads and prevailing traffic conditions that would be encountered during normal driving.
“When I picked up the i30 Diesel I ran it in for 1000 kilometres before commencing from Adelaide to Newcastle via Sydney. I’m looking forward to improving this figure with an i30 Diesel that has been fully run in,” Hans commented.
In a total of 1505.7 kilometres, the i30 Diesel sipped its way to Newcastle via Sydney using only 55.20 litres of diesel fuel.
Tholstrup says that with simple driving techniques and steady concentration, all Australians can help the environment and their hip pockets.
Here are Hans’ top tips to making fuel go further:
Do not accelerate aggressively and ease early when approaching a set of lights or give way sign.
Make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure. Under-inflated tyres sap more energy as they roll forward.
Remove roof racks when they are not being used. This reduces the wind resistance of your car.
The next challenge for the impressive i30 is the World Solar Challenge. The i30 will compete in the Production Class with the aim of bettering an already impressive figure set during the Eco Run.
